The Math Academic Super Bowl team recently competed at their state championship over the weekend and placed first out of over twenty schools participating. The championship was held at Purdue University one Sunday, May 7th, 2016.
Over 290 schools competed across the state of Indiana at various regional competitions in April. The Penn Math Academic Super Bowl competed at Mishawaka High school and placed in the top seven in order to advance to the state championship this past Sunday. Between 400 and 500 students competed at the state championship, and Penn was able to place first in the tournament.
Their are 19 students on the team, coached by Penn math teacher Brad Grounds, and 6 members are on the varsity team. Out of the 12 years that the Math Academic Super Bowl team has existed at Penn, this is only the second time the team has won the state championship.
Students work in groups of three to solve and answer multiple choice questions under a time crunch. Mr. Grounds says that this year’s team is very close and works well together, and they all enjoy math the same as he does.
