A little history lesson: Did you know that today is National Maritime Day? It might seem strange to celebrate something so oddly specific, but, according to Holiday Insights, the U.S. always had plenty of mariners to support the needs of the civilian maritime industry and the U.S. navy. So to support them, the U.S. Congress created National Maritime Day on May 22, 1933. This is also the day the first-ever transoceanic voyage under steam power took place, as the American steamship Savannah set sail from Savannah, Georgia, and reached Liverpool, England.
