Well Water Awareness Day

This past Saturday, the Chemistry Honors classes at Penn High School held a Well Water Awareness Day at ACE Hardware store in Granger.

All year the students have been studying the effects of nitrates in our drinking water, and even brought in water samples from their houses to test for nitrates. They explored the possibility of providing all of Granger with well water, determining equipment and costs needed to make everything happen.

After all their research, they decided that all of Granger needed to be aware of the effects nitrates in their water. Chemistry teachers and students worked together to prepare pamphlets, posters, and banners, to set up. Students made a flier and passed it out everywhere they could, advertising the event all around Granger.

Last Saturday all the students and teachers volunteered to make the day possible.

“A free reverse osmosis water system was given away. It was a really good turn out overall!” sophomore Lorena Daugherty said.

People came to have their water tested by the students, and had the opportunity to learn first-hand how too many nitrates in drinking water can be unhealthy and even deadly.

Environmental Services LLC, who came to Penn in the winter to give the students a presentation about nitrates, provided a reverse osmosis system to raffle and give away.

The event gave students, teachers, and the Granger community a chance see the possible applications of chemistry in the real world.
