After opening the season on the road for the first 5 games, the Penn baseball team finally got their home opener.
On Monday night, Penn took on Bremen at home and captured a 11-0 victory, but that wasn’t the most impressive thing on this spring day.
Penn’s left handed freshman pitcher Ryan Lynch got the start for the Kingsmen and came out impressive. He pitched all 6 innings and stuck out 10 Lions, and earne
d a no-hitter. Lynch is a top underclassmen prospect and is gaining national attention as he pitches around 85 MPH. As a freshman, it is expected to have bumps in the road and being down 3-0 in a count against a Bremen hitter, Senior 3rd basemen Ryan Lau approached Lynch and said, “You have a really good defense behind you, don’t worry about anything except these next pitches.” He went on to strike out the hitter.
Lau was apart of the team when former pitcher and now minor league baseball player Skylar Szynski caught the eye of many scouts, and Lau says “He is not at that level yet only because Skylar was a junior and senior when he was highly recruited, but I can see it happening to Lynch”
Pitching wasn’t the only exciting thi
ng this game, Penn’s strong hitters showed up as Kansas University bound Nolan Metcalf had 2 hits including a home run and drove in 3 runs on the night. Matt Kominkiewicz who is commited to the University of Saint Francis had a 3 run inside-the-park home run.
Penn is now 3-3 and will travel to Elkhart Central Wednesday night, and also will play Marian Friday at home in a big NIC game. Saturday the boys will play a tough Lake Central team in a double header at home.
