Tornado season has officially started in Indiana, with fourteen confirmed tornadoes in the state so far. Tornadoes develop from severe thunderstorms in unstable temperatures and can be extremely dangerous.

The type of damage caused by tornadoes varies in severity, from minor damage to cars and houses to total destruction of a building and even death.

So it is important to prepare for a tornado watch, and know how to stay safe during one.

“Being underground is ideal, so if you have a basement, go in there. If not, closets, bathrooms, places without windows, so you won’t be concerned about broken glass and stuff like that,” Penn environmental science teacher Mr. Sanders said. “And pick the spot you’re going to go, have it cleared out. Like if it’s a closet, make sure you’re not having to take time clearing out that closet, stuff like that.”

It’s important to always have a plan in place at home in case of severe weather and have shelter in an interior room or basement away from windows until tornado season is over in late July.
