Tom Miller Hokum Karem Cross Country Meet Results

The first-ever Tom Miller Hokum Karem Invite took place this past Saturday, August 30, as the Penn Kingsmen honored longtime coach Tom Miller with a dominant performance on their home course.

Penn’s Varsity Girls, ranked No. 7 in the state, swept the podium with an incredible 1-2-4-5 finish to win the team title with just 7 points. The duo of Pentelow and Balinnang claimed first place overall (36:41), while teammates Holland & Smith finished second (36:54). Penn’s depth carried through with Mammolenti & Nayee in fourth and Seiss & Hoveln in fifth.

On the boys’ side, the No. 14-ranked Varsity Boys delivered as well, securing the team title with 13 points. Penn’s top finish came from Lederer and Mainwaring, who placed runner-up overall (30:54). The Kingsmen stacked the top 10 with Grewal & Schafer (4th) and Probest & Boyce (7th), sealing the team victory.

Penn Boys Head Coach, Chad Wetzel, says “We talked about this week that, obviously this invite was named after a long time legendary coach, Coach Miller… We didn’t plan on being here and losing the trophy.”

The Hokum Karem’s relay-style format, emphasizing teamwork and camaraderie, proved to be a fitting tribute to Coach Miller, who retired last spring after 29 years leading Penn Cross Country and 39 years in Track & Field.

First place Penn Girls finished Ari Balinnang says that “It’s really exciting for us to try a different type of meet. Usually we’re just running straight 5Ks, so this is an interesting format to try out. And I think we all had a lot of fun.

Penn Middle Schools also made their presence known. In the Girls Middle School race, Schmucker’s Perez Sophia led the way with a runner-up individual finish (12:18), helping Schmucker claim the team championship with 39 points. Teammate Bridget Ball placed fifth, while Adhara Perez finished seventh. Discovery’s Fiona Richardson (8th) and Grissom’s Evelyn Smoker (9th) also cracked the top 10, all finishing under 13 minutes for a 1.9 mile course.

In the Boys Middle School race, Discovery’s Nolan Holland earned fourth overall (11:21) and teammate AJ Balthes took ninth, leading Discovery to a strong runner-up team finish behind John Young. Schmucker and Grissom.

With both high school squads undefeated to start the season, the Kingsmen not only defended their home course but also honored Coach Miller in the best way possible. PNN brings more analysis this Friday in the weekly show.
