Penn celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage month is an ongoing event dedicated to celebrating Latino culture. Starting on September 15 and continuing until October 15, it is an opportunity for everyone to appreciate Latino culture and its effect on the nation.

Penn’s Latino Student Union (LSU) has helped to integrate the month into the Penn Community. Maria Hernandez, a sophomore and member of the LSU, shares her knowledge of Hispanic Heritage Month.

“We celebrate it in September, because that’s when all of the Latin and Hispanic countries got their independence,” she said. “That’s when they do parades and dinner cookouts and all that stuff.”

The celebration is showcased in many places throughout the school. For example, the plinth of the Kingsman statue has been decorated with the flags of many Spanish countries and paper flowers. The LSU has a float for the Homecoming parade.

Whether you throw big parties, or just discuss it with friends, anyone of descent is encouraged to celebrate Latino heritage through the month.

“It just gets all the cultures together, and it’s just nice to be aware of our heritage,” says Hernandez.
