Penn High School’s Chess Club gives students a healthy and competitive break from video games

Among the multitude of clubs and sports offered here at Penn High School, Chess Club is one that’s devoted to creating a community of intelligent Kingsmen.

Every black Friday, over a whole class of students head to room 127 to play tournaments of chess under the guidance of Penn Math Teacher Jacob Hiscock.

“It’s created a friendly but competitive community here at Penn, and the process of the game has shown benefits to that community,” Hiscock said, “it’s open to everyone, even those who don’t have any experience in the game.”

Junior Alex Sweet is a student leader in chess club, and he emphasizes how inclusive the club is.

“I think joining chess club would be a good idea for a lot of people because honestly, a lot of people are addicted to video games,” Alex said. “Chess club is a good way to get out of video games and still enjoy playing a good strategic game.”

Mr Hiscock has a plan to develop the community of Penn Chess Club outside of the walls of the school. On November twenty-second, members of the chess club participated in the fall South Bend Open, a tournament at Saint Joseph Grade School, open to all.

The club will continue to develop though the second semester and into future school years.
