How much time do you spend on your cell phone each day? Take it out right now and check under your screen time.
According to a recent Fortune study, these teens are spending the equivalent of a forty hour work week on their cell phones, which averages out to over eight hours of screen time a day. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the recommended screen time for teenagers is *no more* than two hours per day.
Indiana state officials are showing concerns about teen smartphone usage. There are currently bills in the state senate looking to address this problem by setting social media age limits.
Senate Bill 11 would require all social media sites to obtain parental consent for a child under 16 to access them.
The currently proposed version of the law right now allows the attorney general to both take action against social media platforms that don’t provide verifiable parental consent forms and to issue a civil investigation if anyone is believed to violate the law.
After a few amendments, the bill passed the Senate on its third reading with a 42-7 vote. The bill is now referred to the house for further discussion.
