A look at the history of the AM General Plant

According to the AM General website, their history can be traced all the way back to 1903. It expanded from the Standard Wheel Company in Terre Haute, Indiana. AM General LLC headquarters are in South Bend, Indiana.They also have facilities in Mishawaka, Indiana- where Democratic Presidential Candidate Hilary Clinton will be visiting on April 26th- and in Michigan, Ohio, and Arlington, Virginia.

In the forties, the AM General Plant, then called Willys-Overland Motors, Inc., designed and manufactured America’s first four-wheel: The Jeep. In 1953, Henry J. Kaiser purchased the company, and in 1960 the company began its first civilian government program.

A local connection for the plant is that it bought Studebaker Corporation manufacturing facilities on Chippewa Avenue in South Bend, Indiana in 1964.

In 1989 AM General relocated to South Bend, and in 1992 they started making Humvees for civilians.

AM General remains an integral part of the Michiana community, employing 1,500 local workers.
