Associate Dean of IUSB’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Associate Professor of English, Lee Kahan, will be hosting the all new Summer Teen Enrichment Programs, or STEPs at IUSB College this summer 2016 for students in grades 9-12.
The activity-centered program’s aim is to enrich and educate students in preparation for college to suit their future learning needs. Taught by Indiana University of South Bend’s faculty, the program holds various one-week intensive learning camps that work as an introduction to college for students to work in their specific field of study. This program is made for students in grades 9-12, but can include 8th graders with strong academic records and a desire to learn.
Each camp is limited to 15 students for the maximum engaging experience. These run from July 11-15th and July 18-22nd, and cost $125 per program, with an additional $20 per week for students wanting an optional lunch. Reduced rates are available for students with financial need. To learn more about financial aid or to register for a program, visit here. Special exceptions may be made for students entering 8th grade if they have a strong academic record.
Summer 2016 Programs include:
- CSI South Bend-Students will learn how to analyze forensic evidence like fingerprints, blood splatters, handwriting, and DNA
- Selfies Forever!-A class where students learn how people have and continue to represent personal identity through a range of different media-from painting and photography to collage and diary-keeping.
- Make a Scene!-A program led by Penn’s own Kevin McNulty in which students recreate a scene from a selected movie to learn about the art that brings a movie to the silver screen.
- Seeing Green-Where one is taught about identifying and adressing sustainability issues through a range of activities, such as touring LEED certified buildings, contributing to the campus’s Unity Garden, creating recycled art, and meeting youth in the area engaged in local climate change policy activism.
