2025 Fall Equinox: What That Means for Everyone in Northern Indiana

The annual Fall Equinox occurred at 2:19 p.m. on Sept 22, 2025, signifying the start of the autumn season in the Northern Hemisphere. What this means is that the time the sun is set will now be longer than the time the sun is risen, which results in longer nights than days.

During the equinox, the time that the sun was up and the time the sun was down were exactly equal. This biannual event gets it’s name from this very happening, as equinox’s definition is ‘equal night.’

Mr. Gensic is a dual-credit biology teacher here at Penn High School.

“Temperatures are going to start to get cooler, days are getting even shorter than what they are already, so you want to make sure you get those fun activities in early,” he said.

The fall equinox makes it easier to tell which direction is east or west. When the sun rose, it was as far as east as it could ever be; and when the sun was set, it was as far west as it could ever be. Next time you see any landmarks right in front of the sun when it rises or sets during an equinox, make a note of things you see that that you’ll always know which way is true east or west.
