On Tuesday night, when the palace at Penn High School was close to sold out, the Marian Knights came hungry for a NIC title.

After winning last year’s NIC crown, the Penn Kingsmen came in second place this year, on their senior night, losing 69-51.

Penn struggled all game shooting the ball, only making 6 out of 20 three point shots. Marian played a 2-3 zone all night and shut down senior Ryan Lutz holding him to only 6 points all night. Billy Doslak was the leading scorer for the Kingsmen with 15, and “Big Man” Matt Trewhella had 10.

Princeton commit, Devin Cannady, led the way in Marian’s victory scoring 25 points and made 5 three pointers. Jair Rodgers scored 13 points and had 5 rebounds. Marian shot 83% from the free throw line and 54% from the field.

The Knights from Marian are now 18-0 and are the outright NIC champions for the season. They will play in the St. Joe sectional in 3A next week.

The Kingsmen are 19-4 this season and are on a 2 game losing streak. They have a chance to stop that streak on Friday night at Merrillville.

Penn is hosting sectionals this year in class 4A and will start their road to state on Wednesday night against the Washington Panthers.
