On Wednesday night, Penn Baseball defeated the Saint Joe Indians to win the Northern Indiana Conference. Penn won with a final score of 3-1. Junior outfielder Brandon Stesiak had two RBIs in the win. Penn’s ace pitcher, Skylar Syzsnki, was on the mound for the Kingsmen and preformed lights out in the win.

Junior Skylar Syzsnki pitched a complete game with 11 strike outs and added a single at the plate. Many in attendance may have been thinking of a no hitter for Syzsnki as he went 3 2/3 innings without giving up a hit. In the bottom of the fourth, the Indians finally got their first hit when junior Riley Stesiak sent a shot deep to right field for what looked to be a home run, but the ball banged against the wall and resulted in a double. The Indians scored their first and only run in the fourth.

Syzsnki cruised through the entire game, a short game that only lasted about an hour and a half. Syzsnki retired two straight batters in the bottom of the seventh and it appeared as if he would end the game under 100 pitches, but the last hitter in the Indians line up, sophomore second baseman, Tony Carmola, hit a pop up that dropped in right field for a single.

Saint Joe had a glimmer of hope with the top of the line upcoming and a runner on first base. Junior shortstop Daniel Torres hit a single to put a runner on first and second base and the game winning run up to bat. The pressure went from on the Indians to on the Kingsmen and the Kingsmen coaches and infield headed to the mound to have a quick meeting with Syzsnki. Something must have came out of the meeting, because Syzsnki retired the batter to win the game, and to be crowned as NIC champs.

The Kingsmen look for a series sweep against Saint Joe tonight, May 22nd, at 7:00 here at Penn, come out and support the Kingsmen!
