PNN Reporter Jiyoon Moon interviewed freshman student Reah.
Reah is of mixed Korean and American descent, and she has her own experience having attended six years of elementary school in Korea.
There are so many differences between her Korean school and her American school. She asked Reah if there was a big difference between Korean and American schools. Additionally, Reah has played the violin since her childhood. So she was also interviewed about the violin

Jiyoon: Hello, I am Jiyoon Moon in PNN. 안녕하세요, 저는 PNN의 문지윤입니다.
Reah: Hello, I am Reah, a freshman student. 안녕하세요, 저는 freshman student 리아입니다.
Reah: I lived in a place called Gyeonggi-do in Korea for 6 years, graduated from elementary school in Korea, and finished the first semester of middle school before returning to the United States. 저는 한국에 있는 경기도라는 곳에서 6년동안 살았고, 초등학교를 한국에서 졸업하고 중학교 1학년 1학기까지 마친 뒤 미국으로 돌아왔습니다.
Jiyoon: What is your most memorable experience from attending school in Korea? 한국 학교를 다닐 때 가장 기억에 남는 일은 무엇인가요?
Reah: When I went to a Korean school, it was difficult for me to adapt at first because I couldn’t speak any Korean. There were times when I felt burdened by the way my Korean friends were surprised to see me because I came from the U.S. and was of mixed race, but I was grateful that most of my friends treated me kindly. 나는 한국 학교를 갔을 때 처음에는 한국말을 하나도 하지 못 해서 적응하기 어려웠다. 한국 친구들이 영어를 쓰는 나를 보고 매우 놀라는 모습이 가장 기억에 남는다. 내가 미국에서 왔고 혼혈이다 보니 나를 보고 놀라는 모습이 많이 부담스러울 때도 있었지만, 대부분의 친구들이 나를 친절하게 대해줘서 고마웠다.
Jiyoon: What is the biggest difference between Korean schools and American schools? 한국 학교과 미국 학교의 가장 큰 차이점은 무엇인가요?
Reah: First, American schools have a more liberal atmosphere than Korean schools. At American schools, I can choose the classes I want, wear whatever clothes I want, and use my cell phone freely. However, unlike American schools, Korean schools have a non-free atmosphere because all classes are set, students must wear school uniforms, and cannot use cell phones. 먼저, 미국 학교가 한국 학교보다 더 자유로운 분위기이다. 미국 학교는 내가 원하는 수업을 선택해서 듣고, 옷도 자유롭게 입을 수 있고, 핸드폰도 자유롭게 사용할 수 있다. 하지만 한국 학교는 미국 학교와 다르게 수업이 다 정해져 있고, 무조건 교복을 입어야 하고, 핸드폰도 사용하지 못하기 때문에 자유롭지 못한 분위기이다.
Jiyoon: Do you prefer Korean schools or American schools? 당신은 한국 학교와 미국 학교 중 어디가 좋나요?
Reah: I prefer American schools. 나는 미국 학교가 더 좋다.
Jiyoon: Why? 그 이유는 무엇이죠?
Reah: I prefer a free atmosphere, and because it is very frustrating to just sit and study all the time, I prefer American schools with a free atmosphere. 나는 자유로운 분위기를 선호하고, 계속 앉아서 공부만 하는 것이 너무 답답하기 때문에 자유로운 분위기인 미국 학교가 더 좋다.
Jiyoon: I know that you have been playing the violin since you were young. When did you start playing the violin? 바이올린을 어릴 때부터 한 것으로 알고 있는데, 언제부터 바이올린을 했나요?
Reah: I have been playing the violin since I was 5 years old. 나는 바이올린을 5살 때부터 하였다.
Jiyoon: Why did you learn to play the violin? 바이올린을 배우게 된 이유는 무엇인가요?
Reah: At first, I started playing the violin because my mother told me to, but as I learned it, I found it more and more interesting, so I continued to play the violin even as I got older. 처음에는 엄마가 시켜서 바이올린을 시작했지만, 배우면서 점점 재밌어졌기 때문에 나이가 들어서도 계속 바이올린을 하고 있다.
Jiyoon: How long do you plan to play the violin? 바이올린을 언제까지 할 예정인가요?
Reah: I plan to continue playing the violin even after I go to college. I will continue to play the violin as long as it doesn’t make me sick. I also plan to minor in violin. 나는 대학에 가서도 바이올린을 계속 할 생각이다. 바이올린으로 인해 몸이 아프지 않는 이상 계속 할 것이다. 나는 부전공으로 바이올린을 할 생각이다.
